There is a new wave of coffee culture sweeping through China right now. Walk into any modern home in Shanghai, Beijing, or Guangzhou, and you won’t just find instant coffee anymore—you’ll find precision grinders, scales, and increasingly sophisticated espresso machines.
We recently had a fantastic young student fly in from China to visit us at Tasse Coffee Roastery in Tokyo. He wasn't a café owner or a long-time professional; he was a passionate "home barista" who simply wanted to brew better coffee for himself and his friends.
His goal? To turn his hobby into a certified skill by taking the SCA Barista Skills Foundation course.
Why Tokyo? Why Tasse?
For a young coffee enthusiast from China, Tokyo is the perfect classroom. The city is famous for its obsession with detail and quality. But there is often a language barrier.
At Tasse Coffee, we bridge that gap. We offer our SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) courses in Mandarin (Chinese), Cantonese, English, and Japanese. This meant our student could learn the intricate technical details of espresso in his native language, ensuring he didn't miss a single drop of knowledge.
The Course: SCA Barista Skills Foundation
Many home baristas learn from watching videos on Bilibili or YouTube. While that’s a great start, there is a limit to what you can learn without hands-on guidance.
The SCA Barista Skills Foundation course is the "bootcamp" that fixes bad habits and builds a professional foundation. Over the course of the training, our student moved from "guessing" to "knowing."
Here is what the day looked like:
-
Grinder Calibration: The most critical skill for any home barista. He learned how to dial in his grind size to get that perfect extraction—no more sour or bitter shots. * Espresso Machine Anatomy: Understanding exactly how the machine works, from pump pressure to temperature stability.
-
The Art of Steaming: This was the game-changer. He learned the physics of micro-foam—how to create that silky, wet-paint texture required for latte art, rather than just "hot bubbly milk." * Machine Maintenance: A professional machine at home is an investment. We taught him the proper cleaning and maintenance protocols to keep his gear running for years.
The "Professional Home Barista"
By the end of the course, he wasn't just a guy with a coffee machine anymore; he was a certified barista.
He returned to China not just with an SCA Certificate, but with the confidence to pull shots that rival his favorite local specialized coffee shops. He can now host friends, serve incredible cappuccinos, and explain exactly why the coffee tastes the way it does.
